Each Battle Pet Pack opens to give 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 "Source of Force" or "Phoenix Feather" items.  (The average is skewed to the low end, roughly 27.5 per pack.)

The pet manager will swap one for the other, in job lots of 100.

You need 9999 'Source of Force' to hatch out a [[Baby Hercules]] pet.<br>
You need 9999 'Phoenix Feather' to hatch out a [[Baby Blazing Phoenix]] pet.

You also need 50,000 coins, and you'll want to have food for them and possibly a tome...

The short answer: On average these pets cost about $145 ''each'', unless you can get the packs on special offer.  And yes, they are by far the best pets in the game.
