A venomancer's pet is her strongest asset. Companion, weapon, shield, distraction and killer. Herein lies a short discussion of pets. == Not a Venomancer? == The bad news: You can't have a fighting pet. You can have an 'all class' pet, which will follow you around and look pretty. Only venomancers can catch the components needed though, so you'll have to trade for it. Mounts (See: Ground) are pets, using up a slot in the pet bag.
== Acquiring a Pet == Venomancers acquire their first pet at level 3. They receive a quest where they are able to choose between a Varicose Scorpion and a Sharptooth Wolfing. At level 7 they receive a quest that enables them to tame other monsters. A complete guide for pet related quests can be found here: Venomancer Pet Quests Another way to acquire pets is by taming them. Tamable monsters will have one of the three following icons near their name: * *Green indicates that the monster can be tamed easily. Venomancers will see this on any tamable mob that is of a lower level than they are. *Yellow indicates that the monster may be challenging and will not be tamed easily. Seen on tamable mobs that are of the same level as the venomancer. *Red indicates that the monster cannot be tamed yet due to the level restriction. One cannot tame a monster of a higher level than their venomancer character. A few guides for taming can be found here: Rare Pet Taming Guide, Rare Pets & Taming Guide
== Land, Air and Sea == Land pets can fight on the land, and if you bring the monster to them can attack air and sea monsters too. However, if you enter the air or sea then your land pet will unsummon. Air pets can, obviously, fight in the air. They will also fight on land - although they aren't smart enough to fly over bumps and often get stuck with their nose in the ground. They can fight sea monsters if they are pulled to the surface, but like land pets will unsummon if you enter the sea yourself. Water pets can pretty much only fight in the water, though they can fight land and air mobs pulled close enough. They unsummon if you leave the water. This means that you will need to use at least three different pets at some point in your career. Legendary pets are a little different. The Hercules and the Phoenix are land and air pets respectively but once they evolve (at level 100) they can be used in water, air and land. The legendary pets Monkey King and Harpy can be used in water, air and land from level 1.
== Improving your pet == There are three basic ways to make a pet better: # You can put it away and choose a new pet. # You can level it up. # You can change its skills. You'll probably use a mixture of these at different points in the game.
=== Choosing a new Pet === The first thing to mention is that you can (and should) have multiple pets. As a venomancer, you have more slots open than other classes, via quests. You can also buy cages to expand the pet bag further. However, if you want another pet and have run out of slots then you can always go to the pet manager and un-hatch an existing pet. It will keep all of its stats and levels and such, ready for you to hatch out again later. you can keep it in your bank, or hand it down to a younger venomancer. When choosing a new pet you need to consider two things: # Its skills. # Its stats. You can see both after you've tamed it (whilst its still an egg, using the tool-tip) As a general rule though: Pets in the same 'family' - that is, pets with the same icon (for example, all the different cactopods are one family, but there are several wolf families) will have the same kinds of skill. The lower level family members will have the fewest, and lowest level skills, the highest will have the most. However - if brought up to the same level, those initially lower-leveled pets will have better stats. A higher attack and defense. Though the runspeed tends to lag behind. Some pets in a family often have skills which you couldn't teach them yet - the snakevalley wolves, for example, have flesh-ream 4 but you could only teach level 2 to another pet of that level. Rare pets also come with skills which are very hard to get any other way.
=== Leveling Up === Each pet has a 'growth chart' which shows you what stats it will gain from leveling up. As a general rule, it will get better at what it is good at, gaining a little attack, defense and hitpoints. It will never get weaker - though the new monsters you use it against might get even stronger. In order to level up your pet, you just need to kill monsters. Your pet will gain EXP from each and every monster kill either you or it makes. (Don't worry, it doesn't steal your experience) The amount of EXP your pet gains depends on only two things: # The loyalty of your pet. (Feed your pet up to 500+ loyalty, for the 150% EXP bonus) # The level of the monster compared to the pets level. It doesn't matter what level you are. If the monster is the pets level or greater, then your pet will gain the maximum of 10 EXP. (15 if you've got the 150% bonus.) For each level below your pet the monster was, the pet gains one less EXP - eventually (on a monster 10 levels lower) gaining nothing at all. Your pet cannot out-level you. It will stop once it is your level and has a full EXP bar, waiting for you to gain a level. I should mention two things: # If you are in a party then you need to get the credit - your pet usually won't gain EXP if the other party members do the majority of the work. # Mounts do not gain EXP from kills (since you cannot fight whilst mounted) - instead they gain EXP over time; until they get to level 11 and have their full runspeed boost and then they stop.
=== Buying and Upgrading Skills === Pets, when tamed, come with a set of skills. Sometimes there is only one, like the starting pet, or four skills. Four is the maximum number of skills one pet can have. Obviously, not all skills the pets come with suit everyone's playing style and sometimes adding new skills or deleting old ones to add new ones is essential for the performance of the pet. Pet skills can be brought from two NPC located in Archosaur, Mrs Zoologist (587 620) and Mr Zoologist (586 649). The latter is underwater and is commonly used to teach water pets skills (because water pets can only be summoned underwater). Prices of the pet skills are between 150,000 coins to 300,000 coins depending on the skill. Pet skills can also be bought in the Auction House (sold by other players) and I highly recommend it as you will often find the pet skills for a lower price than those at the Mrs Zoologist. Pet skills can be upgraded every 20 levels and there are 5 levels in total for most skills (some skills may have have only 2 levels). Level 1 of each skill can be taught to any pet under level 20. Level 2 of each skill can be taught to any pet under level 40. Level 3 of each skill can be taught to any pet under level 60. Level 4 of each skill can be taught to any pet under level 80 and, finally, level 5 of each skill can to taught to any pet of level 80 and above. Therefore, the core levels for upgrading pet skills are 20, 40, 60 and 80. In order to upgrade a pet's skill a Tame Book is required. A tame book can be bought at any Zoologist for 200,000 coins. An important note that shall be mentioned here is that there are pets who appear to have skills that normally their level range wouldn't allow them to have. Such pet is the Lunar Wolf that comes with Howl level 5 despite being below level 80. If one wishes to remove an existing skill from a pet, a Forget Scroll is required. A forget scroll can be bought at any Zoologist for 100,000 coins.

;Pet Skill scrolls that can be bought at Zoologists are the following: (description of each skill is for maxed level) *Bash: Launch a fierce strike at the enemy, dealing 200% of Pet's base physical damage. *Flesh Ream: Bite an enemy, inflicting base damage plus 200% of Pet's base damage over 9 seconds. *Fireball: Hurl a fireball at the enemy, inflicting Fire damage equal to 200% of Pet's base physical damage. *Icicle: Throw an icicle at the enemy, inflicting Water damage equal to 200% of Pet's base physical damage. *Toxic Mist: Cast a fog of toxin on the enemy, inflicting Wood damage equal to 200% of Pet's base physical damage. *Thunderbolt: Launch a thunderbolt at the enemy, inflicting Metal damage equal to 200% of Pet's base physical damage. *Sandblow: Cast a blow of sand to the enemy, inflicting Earth damage equal to 200% of Pet's base physical damage. *Roar: Roar to attract enemy's attacks. *Howl: Scare the enemy with a howl, decreasing enemy's Magic Defense by 36% for 15 secs. *Pierce: Attack enemy and decrease enemy's Physical Defense by 36% for 15 secs. *Threaten: Threaten enemy to decrease enemy's Physical Attack by 36% for 15 secs. *Shriek: Shriek at an enemy to have a 100% chance to interrupt channeling. *Slow: Decrease enemy speed by 50% for 6 secs. *Tough: Reduce damage taken by 50% for 15 secs. *Boost: Recover 12% of Maximum HP.
There are some rare pet skills that are referred to as Legendary Pet Skills. Those are rare pet skill scrolls that can be found in the weekly event Temple of the Dragon. There is a chance to get a scroll by digging the chests. Usually players will put them in the Auction House for sale but be aware that these skills are expensive and prices can be between 5 million to 20 million coins.

;Legendary Pet Skill scrolls are the following: (description of each skill is for maxed level) *Pounce: Have a 80% chance to stun enemy for 3 secs. Evolved Hercules (level 100) can also fly. Top water pets: *Abysmal Turtle *Highlands Tortoise *Celestial Plumpfish *Asgard Plumpfish Note: Monkey King and Harpy can swim from level 1. Evolved Hercules and evolved Phoenix(level 100) can also swim. Harpy and Phoenix are DD oriented, Hercules is a tank pet and Monkey could be either DD or tank depending on how you build it. Top Debuff pets: *None, because pet skills can be customized :) Alright with the list, but what pet should I really choose?!: A lot of venomancers use the Glacial Walker as their main tank pet when they cannot afford a Hercules or until they buy one. It is currently the best substitute to the Baby Hercules Pet. Another popular choice is the Shaodu Cub (which sometimes is replaced by the Armored Bear at lvl80) due to the nice balance of defenses as well as the legendary pet skill Pounce that comes with them. Most of the time venomancers opt to acquire the Baby Hercules. For DPS, venomancers usually choose between the Dark Wanderer or the Varicose Scorpion. The Baby Blazing Phoenix is the best DPS pet, but is an air pet and therefore cannot be used in instances. After level 100, the evolved Phoenix can swim and can be used in instances. After the introduction of the newest legendary pets, the Harpy is arguably the best DPS pet as of now surpassing the Phoenix post-evolution. Prior the evolution the Harpy and the Phoenix are probably equal. The Harpy's advantage is that it's ranged (doesn't have a single melee attack), has AOE attacks and can be taken on land, in the air and underwater since level 1. For air combat venomancer will either choose between a tank or a DD. For tanking, there is no other option than the Windwalking Piggy, as an alternative to the Baby Blazing Phoenix. For a good DD air pet the choices are usually between Cloud Skatefish and Petite Sawfly. Most of the time venomancers opt to acquire the Baby Blazing Phoenix which is the best air DD and tank. After the introduction of the newest legendary pets, the Harpy and the Monkey King can serve as decent pets for both DDing and tanking in the air. Evolved Hercules can also fly. For water combat and quests most venomancers tame any water pet of their level range and use it just for the quests until they reach level 80 and stick with the Celestial Plumpfish. Some venomancers that have patience level up the Abysmal Turtle or the Highlands Tortoise as it has better stats at higher levels than the Plumpfish. After the introduction of the newest legendary pets, the Harpy and the Monkey King can serve as decent pets for both DDing and tanking underwater. Evolved Hercules and evolved Phoenix can also swim. For pulls, venomancers choose either a ranged pet or a fast pet. I suggest having both types if your pet bag has enough slots. Most popular choice for ranged is the Eldergoth Marskman or the Celestial Sting and for speed is the Kowlin.
