There are currently nine servers for PWI. All servers are named after cities in the game, except for the European servers, which are named after high level map areas.

You can find the online/offline status of the servers and their current times here. Also, when you're logged into the game you can find the server time by opening the Encyclopedia, clicking "Events", and the server time will be displayed there.

Servers are normally only down for about 2 hours from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning for maintenance/updates (approximately 11 PM to 1 AM Pacific Time). You can check the General Discussion section of the forums Tuesday evening to see whether or not they are having maintenance and what the estimated time range is.

On PvE servers, players normally can only attack each other if they go into PK (Player Killing) mode, which lasts for a minimum of 10 hours. (A few areas still remain, such as some rooms in the Cube of Fate, where PK is always enabled.)

Selecting a Server

When choosing a server you should consider the one with:

  • - Lowest ping time.
  • - Time zone: East or West.
  • - PvE or PvP.

Note: "Ping time" is the the overall time it takes for data to travel from your computer to the server and back to your computer. Usually servers that are closer to your location will have lower ping times than those further away, but ping time can vary quite a bit. For best results, make sure you aren't using much of your bandwidth for other things while playing.

Character Name Exclusiveness

Some of the servers share the same name database. This means that if you create a character on one of those servers, that character's name will be unavailable on the other servers that use the same name database. This is in case the servers need to be merged in the future. Currently, there are six(?) or seven(?) name databases:

PvE West: Heaven's Tear, Sanctuary, and Archosaur
PvP West: Lost City
PvE East: Dreamweaver
PvE East: Raging Tide
PvP East: Harshlands

At this point it's unknown whether the two European servers (Lothranis and Momaganon) share a name database with each other or not.
